Announcement from Region 9 Coordinator Chris BucholtzApril 13, 2009 Next Contest: Kickoff Classic, This Saturday! I hope you're all getting your entries ready for the Kickoff Classic this Saturday, the largest show in our region and one that promises to be memorable this year. As always, we expect visitors from southern California and parts east; there are a mob of special awards and 52 regular categories. The show's at the Santa Clara Convention Center; all the details can be seen on the website, www.svsm.org. Vendors can still contact Greg Plummer [...] if they'd like a table or two. The club plans to contact past judges via e-mail and get their early commitment to judging; as anyone who judged last year can attest, the club gets this done quickly and efficiently - and with minimal hassle to the judges! Before the emails go out, you can respond to me and I'll make sure you're on the list come Saturday. 2008 Chapter of the Year Race ends - 2009 Race starts I'm very enthusiastic about presenting the 2008 Hugh Silvas Award for the Region 9 Chapter of the Year. The winning club set a record for points and, I think, will have an inside track for national chapter of the year. Which chapter is it? Find out Saturday when the award is presented! Now, the race is on for 2009. Chapter contacts, your job is to put your bid together and get it to me by Feb. 15, 2010. Just list what your club did in 2009, accrue the points to that list as seen below, and send it my way. Our system is designed to even out the big club-little club differences between our various chapters. Essentially, the hardest-working club, regardless of its size, wins! Here's how we score it: 1. Host a contest: four points. 2. Organize a public display: two points 3. Conduct a make-and-take: two points 4. Organize a charitable event (model drive, benefit, etc.): three points 5. Host a guest speaker: one point 6. Publish a monthly newsletter: 3 points 7. Produce a website: 3 points 8. Re-charter before Dec. 1: 5 points 9. Re-charter before Jan. 1: 3 points 10. Have a member gain R9 Qualified Judging Status: 1 point per member Again, for the 2009 award, chapter contacts must track their clubs' performances and report their results to me no later than Feb. 15, 2010. Anything submitted after that date will be disregarded and disqualified. The reporting year goes from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. The winning club's name is inscribed in perpetuity on the Hugh Silvas Region 9 Chapter of the Year Award. Winners then get a chance at the IPMS National Chapter of the Year award. IPMS Elections coming up - Vote! The IPMS is electing a new slate of officers over the next few months; the ballots will be in your Journals, as will candidate statements. This year, it seems that candidates will also explain their ideas on the IPMS/USA discussion forums, so we'll have an unprecedented opportunity to weigh their ideas and cast our votes based on knowledge. But the key here is to cast your vote - we typically pick our leadership with less than 25 percent of the membership being involved! Please encourage your fellow members to put a few minutes of time into this extremely important function of membership - it is literally the least they can do!
