Announcement from Region 9 Coordinator Chris Bucholtz

March 3, 2009

The glowing reports of the success of the Petaluma show were all but universal. I was unable to make it (for reasons which I'll elaborate on a little later), but let me allow John Admire to explain just how wonderful the show was - and to give credit to those who made it work:

"We would like to say Thank You to our partners at IPMS/Mt.Diablo for their continuing support of the show. A Great Big Congratulations goes out to all of the winners at the show, there were definitely some really fine models and modelers.

"We want to recognize our sponsors who have been so generous in their support, we really appreciate it!

"And of course our vendors who usually get little recognition, but without them the show could not go on. Thank you to all of you and we hope that you will continue to support us.

"As everyone knows, no one person can put together a show as successful as this one was, you need a team effort. So I would like to THANK EVERYONE who helped make this a truly great show.

"A Big thank you to Steve Elliott and his family for all of their time and effort that they have put forward to make the show what it is today. Thanks again Steve, Jean and Family.

"I wouldÊ like to send out thanks to Mike Winters for his hard work organizing the vendors. Great job as usual Mike!

"A special thanks to Greg Reynolds for all of his hard work. Greg has put in a lot of time to make the expo what it is today.

"Thanks go to Brett Halby and Paul Anderson for putting on another outstanding raffle again this year - just look at those tables!!

"And how about that speed build this year with the egg planes....pretty cool. Thank you Dave Grundman for heading up the Speed Build, it seemed to go flawlessly and the competitors were having a lot of fun.

"Thanks also go out to our collating crew of Doug Dropesky, Jae Ricketts, Tim Admire, and Brad Rush and Head Judge Dale Bohling and Assistant Head Judge John Clements. (They) were hard at it all day and did a super job for us. Thank You both Dale and John!

"I would also like to thank all of the hobby clubs that attended this year's show. By including these clubs has greatly accelerated the popularity of the Expo. Please join us again next year.

"A Thank You has to go to Hans Beerbaum for bringing his German anti aircraft gun and many other German WWII display items. The AA gun was a big hit with the kids!

"Our registration crew deserves some kudos for their hard work Thanks Tom Berto, Pat Nichols and Danny Serrano - another job well done!

"I would like to thank our club members John Boes, Bill Stewart and Tom Young for manning the club booth and recruiting new members.

"And I do not want to forget the Girl Scouts who provided the refreshments again this year for us...the girls did a great job.... Thanks a lot!

"Vendors seemed like they were doing well with the sales all day, with people carrying model boxes out by the stacks.

"I would like to thank Doug Erickson for organizing the Civil War reenacators of the 1st Irish Brigade, 69th New York Inf. We hope you will join us again next year.

"This show is one of the most successful shows we have put on, we continue to set the bar high for local shows to challenge. The kind of results that we saw yesterday comes only from a lot of hard work from many individuals.

"Thanks again everyone for making this a really great expo!"

2008 Chapter of the Year Race ends - 2009 Race starts
We have a winner for the the Hugh Silvas Award for Chapter of the Year in Region 9 for 2008, after a remarkably low number of submissions for the award. We'll present it at the Kickoff Classic after I've had time to have the 2008 winner's name engraved on this perpetual award. The winner will then be nominated for the national chapter of the year award. The rest of the chapters should pummel their chapter contacts for not submitting a bid - all your hard work last year was not recognized, even by your own RC!

Now, the race is on for 2009. Chapter contacts, your job is to put your bid together and get it to me by Feb. 15, 2010. Just list what your club did in 2009, accrue the points to that list as seen below, and send it my way. Our system is designed to even out the big club-little club differences between our various chapters. Essentially, the hardest-working club, regardless of its size, wins! Here's how we score it:

1. Host a contest: four points
2. Organize a public display: two points
3. Conduct a make-and-take: two points
4. Organize a charitable event (model drive, benefit, etc.): three points
5. Host a guest speaker: one point
6. Publish a monthly newsletter: 3 points
7. Produce a website: 3 points
8. Re-charter before Dec. 1: 5 points
9. Re-charter before Jan. 1: 3 points
10. Have a member gain R9 Qualified Judging Status: 1 point per member

Again, for the 2009 award, chapter contacts must track their clubs' performances and report their results to me no later than Feb. 15, 2010. Anything submitted after that date will be disregarded and disqualified. The reporting year goes from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. The winning club's name is inscribed in perpetuity on the Hugh Silvas Region 9 Chapter of the Year Award. Winners then get a chance at the IPMS National Chapter of the Year award.

Next Contest: Kickoff Classic, April 18
The next major IPMS event in our region is at the Santa Clara Convention Center on April 18, the Kickoff Classic. All the details can be seen on the website, www.svsm.org; there are over 50 categories, more than 15 special awards, and the vendor turnout looks to be quite good this year! If you have any questions you can contact me directly; vendors should go to Greg Plummer at gregplummer@gregplummer.com.

Region IX Special Project: Travis AFB Museum Model Expo?
A number of members are examining the possibility of an event at Travis Air Force base that would be a model expo - not a contest, but a big, bring-all-the-models-you-have show that would be open to all of Region 9. The museum would sponsor it (and insure it), and we may have vendor tables, and we may do a set of "people's choice awards," and we may organize the models by era or subject - or not! The whole thing is in the exploratory stages, and I and some other members of an exploratory committee hope to meet with Terry Juran, the director of the Travis Air Museum, sometime this month.

I was absent from the Santa Rosa show because the weekend before I went to Seattle to see the Northwest Scale Modelers' Show at the Museum of Flight at Boeing Field. This event drew 1959 models from fewer than 60 modelers - and it was a big hit with the museum spectators. The key was teamwork with the museum to get things set up and torn down and then the presence of the modelers to act as guides, security and to run a make-and-take event. They also set up several tables at which modelers worked on kits, providing a handy demonstration of what goes into building a model.

I think we have a chance to do something similar here that could boost the hobby, get some people out to a great museum, and be a lot of fun. If you're interested in learning more, contact me.
