Announcement from Region 9 Coordinator Chris Bucholtz

January 21, 2009

Re-chartering period is over; Region 9 loses two chapters

Two of our chapters were unable to complete the re-chartering process in time: IPMS/Humboldt Bay and IPMS/Kings County. I one case, the reason may simply be dwindling numbers of modelers in the area. In the other case, it was almost certainly the fact that the club chapter contact quit, the club failed to appoint or forward a new contact's information, and the old contact never bothered to let his former club members know I was trying to contact them.

That situation should drive home two points: one, the chapter contact is a very important person in your club and he needs to be trustworthy, communicative and committed to the task. Two, if you have a change at chapter contact, for heaven's sake, contact me and the director of local chapter so we know who to speak to in your club. Otherwise, we have no way of communicating to you.

Chapter of the Year 2008: Who's it Going to Be?
This is the time to start assembling your final bids for the Hugh Silvas Award for Chapter of the Year in Region 9. The boys from Yuba City will be bringing the trophy to the Santa Rosa Show, and I will by that time know the winner, but we'll present it at the Kickoff Classic after I've had time to have the 2008 winner's name engraved on this perpetual award. The winner will then be nominated for the national chapter of the year award.

Chapter contacts, your job is to put your bid together and get it to me by Feb. 15. Just list what your club did in 2008, accrue the points to that list as seen below, and send it my way. We often get very few bids, shockingly enough, so I strongly recommend you put one together - you could belong to the winning club, but you're guaranteed not to win by failing to submit a bid. Our system is designed to even out the big club-little club differences between our various chapters. Essentially, the hardest-working club, regardless of its size, wins! Here's how we score it:

1. Host a contest: four points.
2. Organize a public display: two points
3. Conduct a make-and-take: two points
4. Organize a charitable event (model drive, benefit, etc.): three points
5. Host a guest speaker: one point
6. Publish a monthly newsletter: 3 points
7. Produce a website: 3 points
8. Re- charter before Dec. 1: 5 points
9. Re-charter before Jan. 1: 3 points
10. Have a member gain R9 Qualified Judging Status: 1 point per member

Again, for the 2008 award, chapter contacts must track their clubs' performances and report their results to me no later than Feb. 15, 2009. Anything submitted after that date will be disregarded and disqualified. The reporting year goes from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. The winning club's name is inscribed in perpetuity on the Hugh Silvas Region 9 Chapter of the Year Award. Winners then get a chance at the IPMS National Chapter of the Year award.

Next Journal will have a little something extra...
Not t exploit my position as Journal managing editor, but you'll want to bring the next issue of the Journal to your club meeting to help sway the fence-sitters. This issue will include, for the first time, a decal sheet, featuring markings in 1:72, 1:48 and 1:32 for the always-popular P-47 Thunderbolt. We continue to seek ways to add value to membership, and I hope you use the Journal as a tool for recruiting new members. In the past, we use to have to rely on the "intangible" benefits of membership as selling points for IPMS/USA; today, we have tangible benefits to talk about, and I hope you do!
