Announcement from Region 9 Coordinator Chris BucholtzSeptember 29, 2008 Rechartering Process Starts Oct. 1 By now, all of your chapter contacts should have received you clubs' fact sheet, which articulates precisely what you'll need to do to get your chapter re-chartered for 2009. Our region has very few issues to resolve (officers needing to become IPMS members, members-at-large needing to become members, etc.) and several clubs only need to send in their $20 re-chartering fee. That doesn't mean that we'll be done with re-chartering in a hurry; procrastination is the biggest issue in the re-chartering process. That said, I strongly encourage you to bring this up in you next club meeting, and if your chapter contact doesn't bring it up you should speak up and ask about it. It's incredibly easy to do, but if it's never thought about it won't happen. And we all know what happens to things like this once the holidays roll around! The deadline is Jan. 1. I strongly urge you to get the re-chartering ball rolling much earlier than that. If you have any questions about re-chartering, just ask me. Fresno has Just one Club Left... No, a meteorite didn't strike one of the clubs during a meeting. Actually, this is a good thing: Central Valley Scale Modelers and Fresno Scale Modelers have re-united, following a long schism (fancy word for "the town had two IPMS clubs"). Since they shared many members, this should help strengthen the unified club, give it more resources and take some of the burden off the various club officers. Congratulation on your reunion! High Rollers Contest a Hit The modelers who reported back to me about the Reno contest said it was the biggest show in five or six years! The "Reel to Real" category was said to have had 30 entries alone! Hopefully, next time Doug Summers, the Highest of the High Rollers, can give us the full report, but from the sounds of things the show came up 21, or hit the jackpot, was a royal flush, or was so successful it resulted in a series of strained gambling metaphors. Chapter of the Year 2008: Just Two Months Left... Now's the time to kick your club's efforts in gear, and it's a great time for displays, demonstrations and other outreach efforts. Reaching a young person and his parents could result in a model kit as a gift, which could result in a lifetime hobby for that youngster - or even for his or her parent! Our system is designed to even out the big club-little club differences between our various chapters. Essentially, the hardest-working club, regardless of its size, wins! Here's how we score it: 1. Host a contest: four points. 2. Organize a public display: two points 3. Conduct a make-and-take: two points 4. Organize a charitable event (model drive, benefit, etc.): three points 5. Host a guest speaker: one point 6. Publish a monthly newsletter: 3 points 7. Produce a website: 3 points 8. Re-charter before Dec. 1: 5 points 9. Re-charter before Jan. 1: 3 points 10. Have a member gain R9 Qualified Judging Status: 1 point per member For the 2008 award, chapter contacts must track their clubs' performances and report their results to me no later than Feb. 15, 2009. Anything submitted after that date will be disregarded and disqualified. The reporting year goes from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. The winning club's name is inscribed in perpetuity on the Hugh Silvas Region 9 Chapter of the Year Award (which was proudly displayed at the Dragon Lady Contest in Yuba City on July 27). Winners then get a chance at the IPMS National Chapter of the Year award.
