Announcement from Region 9 Coordinator Chris BucholtzAugust 11, 2008 Region 9'ers Kick Butt in Virginia Beach At the nationals, there weren't a ton of Region 9 modelers, but several took awards - namely, Ben Pada, Vladimir Yakubov and Tom Leutzinger. Perhaps more impressive was that the awards slide show, which Vladimir oversaw, went completely flawlessly, probably the first such show in IPMS nationals history. By the way, this was the second largest show in IPMS history (behind Atlanta three years ago)! I Bet the Regional was Great, Too! The only downside of being at the nationals was missing the regional in Fresno. Mike Burton was my proxy, and I've heard good things about the event - thanks go to the guys from Fresno and the King City Scale Modelers for hosting this show. If they'd send me a report, I'll relay it to the rest of the region for you. Former Region 9 Chapter takes IPMS CoY Award Congratulations to IPMS/Manila for winning the National Chapter of the Year Award. The Boys from Manila are now part of Region 13 (which covers clubs outside the continental U.S. and Hawaii), but they started their tremendous advocacy for the hobby while part of Region 9. Congratulations to Noel Carpio and the rest of the club! Stupid Contest Trick: Making No-Sweeps Easy At the nationals, the contest used a technique to make judging a no-sweeps event easy. They used an entrant number (this time, your IPMS number) and a second entry number for each model. For instance, my entries were 33768-1, 33768-2 and 33768-3. In the case of a sweep situation, the judges could just look at the first number and know models were built by the same person (although the anonymity of the builder was also preserved). For clubs doing regionals, which are by IPMS rules no sweeps, this could be a useful technique to adopt. Chapter of the Year 2008: Who's it Going to Be? I see bits and pieces about clubs doing great things in their communities (see the build class taught to the Boy Scouts by San Joaquin Valley Scale Modelers' Alan Weber and Bob Phillips in the current issue of the Journal), but who will come out on top at year's end? Our system is designed to even out the big club-little club differences between our various chapters. Essentially, the hardest-working club, regardless of its size, wins! Here's how we score it: 1. Host a contest: four points. 2. Organize a public display: two points 3. Conduct a make-and-take: two points 4. Organize a charitable event (model drive, benefit, etc.): three points 5. Host a guest speaker: one point 6. Publish a monthly newsletter: 3 points 7. Produce a website: 3 points 8. Re-charter before Dec. 1: 5 points 9. Re-charter before Jan. 1: 3 points 10. Have a member gain R9 Qualified Judging Status: 1 point per member For the 2008 award, chapter contacts must track their clubs' performances and report their results to me no later than Feb. 15, 2009. Anything submitted after that date will be disregarded and disqualified. The reporting year goes from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. The winning club's name is inscribed in perpetuity on the Hugh Silvas Region 9 Chapter of the Year Award (which was proudly displayed at the Dragon Lady Contest in Yuba City on July 27). Winners then get a chance at the IPMS National Chapter of the Year award.
