Wings of Gold 2007
Region 9 Model Display Planned
For "Wings of Gold" U.S. Navy Aces
Last April, Greg Reynolds, Randy Bumgardner, Laramie Wright, Mike Burton and your regional coordinator staged a model display at the 354th Fighter Group Reunion where five of their aces spoke. (See photos of this event.)
We were invited to participate by the Northern California Friends (NCF) of the American Fighter Aces Association. Our display included models of four of the five men present at the reunion. We have another opportunity on October 21, when the NAF hosts "Wings of Gold" at the Hiller Aviation Museum, located at the San Carlos Airport. "Wings of Gold" will feature U.S. Navy Aces:
Alex Vraciu
Dean S. "Diz" Laird
Robert Duncan
L.D. Prater
Joe McGraw
For our display, we already have a Vraciu Hellcat, and I'm building McGraw's FM-2 Wildcat. Mike Woolson is planning to build "Diz" Laird's plane. But we still need volunteers to build Robert Duncan and L.D. Prater's Hellcats - and we need models of other Navy aces' planes as well! If you have them, or if you want to build them, they'll be welcome.
If you want to participate in this opportunity to meet and hear the aces and, at the same time, spread the word about modeling and IPMS, please let me know so we can plan the display and make arrangements with the Northern California Friends of the Aces.
