Club Announcements (by John Admire, President):
• The Club Picnic will be on Saturday, August 2 at the same locations as last year: Lower Jack Rabbit picnic area, Spring Lake Park. You can find a map and more information in the flyer archive.
• There are still a few spots available for our private tour of the Littlefield Tank Museum in Portola Valley. This will be on Saturday, May 17 at 1pm. If you with to attend, please contact John Admire. Carpooling is available and encouraged. All attendees must pay a $5 reservation fee.
• The 2007 Region Nine Chapter of the Year is IPMS Dragon Lady of Yuba City. This was announced at Silicon Valley's Kickoff Classic. IPMS Santa Rosa was a real contender, but Yuba City amassed more points with displays, speakers, newsletters, charity drives, etc., than any club in the history of the award. Congratulations, Yuba City!
• On Sunday, July 27, IPMS Dragon Lady/Yuba City will hold their annual model contest and show. A huge contingent of Dragon Lady members attended Hobby Expo, so let's give their show a big boost. Please see the Event Calendar for more information about all future events.
• Please consider participating in the free club kit build program. The club will buy you a kit worth approximately $40. In return, you must complete an in box, in progress, and completed model review over three club meetings. You get a free kit and incentive to build it. What a deal!
• Board meetings take place on the fourth Thursday of every month, at the Round Table Pizza in the Marlow Shopping Center, Santa Rosa, starting at 6:30pm. Please come to the board meetings if you would like to contribute.

We had a special guest, Tom Harrison of Tom's Modelworks, maker of hundreds of PE and white metal detailing sets for WWI aircraft and ships of all scales. You can see all of his goodies on his website. Tom relocated to Santa Rosa a few year ago.

May 8, 2008 Show and Tell

We had three slide presentations. First was pictures taken by John Admire of the Silicon Valleys Kickoff Classic held on April 19, 2008 at the Santa Clara Convention Center.

Second was a presentation of IPMS Seattle's Spring Show held on the same day at the Renton Community Center which Greg Reynolds attended.

And lastly John Admire provided us with a detailed step by step look at his award winning 1/16 scale Finnish T-34/85 by Trumpeter.

Show and Tell was lead off by Mike Vice, who provided the third an final installment of his club sponsored "Build Review" of the 1/48 Eduard Pfalz D.IIIa "Weekend" issue. The diorama is complete, except for the a British mechanic standing on a ladder over-painting one of the upper wing crosses with the British roundel which Mike originally planned.

Mike rigged his Pfaltz with stretched spure, but wishes he had used .005" diameter stainless steel wire. This is available (in a variety of sizes) from Small Parts Inc. in straight (uncoiled) 30" pieces. The trick is to pre-drill blind holes in the model. With the wire cut long enough to extend into the holes at both ends, it stay straight and in place by its own stiffness. A little glue in the holes will keep it secure.

Tom Harrison pointed out that because of the high polish of the metal wire, it is impossible to get a strong bond. He recommends using fine invisible thread. This will stick to CA, but must be pulled taunt. This can be done by threading a single piece of thread through multiple holes, pulling on the free end and tacking the individual sections one at a time.

Tom Young brought in LOTS of models this month, starting with his "Spirit of Minneapolis, St Paul". This double Ryan NYP was inspired by the Christmas Party giveaway of the Testors/Hawk Spirit of St Louises. Tom painted his creation with Rustoleum in the rattle can. The cowling decals are laserjet printed, artwork by Greg Reynolds.

In keeping with our "Century of Progress, 1926 to 1950" theme, Tom also brought in a collection of 1/72 WWII models. The Brewster Buffalo is a kit bash of the Airfix and Matchbox kits and features a scratchbuilt interior.

The Fairchild PT-19 is one of Tom's own "Model Aire International resin kits, followed by a red FW 190A-8, and the Twelve Squared Northrop JB-1.

The FW 190A-8 is the Airfix kit built out of the box except for the antennae wire. This aircraft came down intact at an American Bomber base in St. Trond, Belgium on January 1, 1945. The aircraft was repainted overall insignia red with black prop spinner, wing walks and the area aft of the engine cowling. The markings reflect the squadron code and the date of capture on the tail. Guns were retained for a while. The national markings probably came from a Micro Scale sheet. The emblem on the nose was on the aircraft when it landed and was retained on the left side only. That emblem came with the decals in the Airfix kit.

Tom also brought diormamas built around an M3 White Scout Car and Kubelwagen, respectively.

The White M3 Scout Car is an ESCI kit. Tom opened a door, removed a gas can and replaced it with a scratch-built rack and straps, replaced the rail .50 with a Maxim MG (as this is a Soviet car). The base is clay on an old marble trophy base. Tom loves this kit and plans to build at least one more. It took a first place, but he does not remember where.

The Kubelwagen diorama was the first vehicle Tom built after making custom cars in high school. It took a first (IIRC) at the 1974 Nationals in San Francisco. The Kubelwagen is from Hasegawa, German figures modified from Priesser, and British figures modified from Fujimi. The Hurricane prop blade and rudder were from a messed up Matchbox kit with added details. The base is clay, sand and small rocks. The display box is a wooden cigarette box.

The diorama depicting the capture of a German general by British troops. This was based on an actual incident in which German troops captured a British general.

Jack Riggar brought in his ZIS truck, now displayed on the street scene he showed us in process last month. Jack got a second with his truck at the Kickoff Classic.

Chris Salak showed this Bergepanzer III. It's the old Tamiya Panzer III kit which he originally built in '73. He re-built it recently and added the Ostketten tracks to help disguise some uncorrectable problems with the fender width. He did a lot of work to correct the suspension and tensioners.

Mike Winters's reports that the Academy M10 is a great state of the art kit. One problem to watch out for, however, is the articulated suspension. The rubber pads in the arms put too much tension on the link track and will pull it out of shape, making it look unrealistic. He recommends gluing the suspension up solid so the lay of the track is more natural. Mike jazzed up the kit with a lot of PE and scratchbuilt details. The netting is made from wedding veil. The model was painted with enamels and weathered with oil "filters" and pigments. Mike used linseed oil to simulate wet spots.

John Admire brought in his award winning 1/16 scale Trumpeter T-34/85 in Finnish markings. Please view the May Model Showcase for more pictures of this excellent model. WINNER: THEME AWARD

Spencer Lew brought in his finished Camero that we saw in progress a few months ago. Dad helped a little with the painting, but the rest is Spencer's. Very nice work.

Charlie Dailey built these two "company trucks" for the company he worked for a few years ago. He made his own decals for the company logos by scanning and (greatly!) reducing the original full size artwork. Modifications and scratchbuilt additions include new tires, bucket seats, ladders, tools, crates and doughnuts. In the end, Charlie couldn't part with the models, so he parted with the company instead.

John Boes showed off the progress in his scratchbuilt 1/24 scale 1911 Marmon "Wasp" Indianapolis racer. John turned the wheel hubs and added dozens of tiny nuts & bolt heads. Rather than bother with casting, he "just" did it all four times. The tires are large o-rings.

Brett Halby's in progress "Ruined Farmhouse" is based on a Verlinden plaster casting. He is using Elmer's acrylic latex redi-spack for filling and texturing. This works great for older Verlinden Productions diorama sets, since the have no interior detail whatsoever. The beams and doors are made from balsa and stained. The door hardware is from Aber and Eduard PE sets. Brett plans to make this into a sniper diorama.
