Demonstration: Chipped Paint (by John Admire):
You can use a sponge, dipped and blotted in paint, to simulate paint chips. John Boes also suggests using a potato for this purpose. You can easily cut the potato to any desired shape, and the uneven surface distributes paint randomly.

Jack Riggar suggests an alternate, four step method. First, paint the model aluminum, steel, primer, or whatever color you want to chip down to. Second, seal the model with Future. Third, paint the model in the correct paint scheme. And finally, use transparent tape to randomly pick take flakes out of the final coat, revealing the color underneath.

Slide Show: IPMS Santa Rosa Make and Take at the Wings Over the Wine Country (by Greg Reynolds):
Greg presented a brief slide show of the make and take, featuring many happy kids and their models. These photos now appear online for your viewing pleasure.

Slide Show: IPMS National Model Contest (by Greg Reynolds):
Greg presented a comprehensive slide show of superlative models at the IPMS National Model Contest held in Anaheim, California. These photos now appear online for your viewing pleasure.

Question and Answer:
What do you use to make arials for aircraft?
Use stretched sprue or one pund fishing line.

What solvent and tools work best to thoroughly clean an airbrush?
Use Pine Sol, airbrush tip reamers, and dental brushes.
Editor's Note: Pine Sol dissolves some acrylics, but does not work on a mixture of Model Master acrylics and enamals. A cellulose based thinner (a.k.a., lacquor thinner) works best in most cases, because it dissolves acrylic, enamal/oil, and lacquor based paints. When finished, thoroughly clear all lacquor thinner because it will attack styrene and other plastics. Do not soak your airbrush in lacquor thinner for long periods. It will attack the chrome finish and even pit the underlying metal.

Lon Irwin brought in the first two models, an American P-38 Lockheed Lightning and a Japanese Kawasaki Ki-61 Tony, both by Revell in 1/32 scale. Lon spent 3 months removing, correcting, and restoring the P-38s superchargers, using a lot of chalk in the process.

Pat Nichols displayed the next three models, a Russian Zil 151 command truck by ICM in 1/72 scale, a Russian T-55 by PST in 1/72 scale, and a Russian BMP-1 by ACE in 1/72 scale.

ICM makes three versions of the Zil 151, a command truck (shown here), a police version, and a rocket armed variant (shown below).

Pat used Bison Decals on the T-55, depicted as a Balken Wars vehicle after the tank was captured.

The BMP-1, an ACE resin kit costing about $6 US, was painted plack, then sand, then white, hit with a "grunge" wash, and finally drybrushed a sand color. The model represents a vehicle used by Pat's son.

Bill also brought in the next two items, the latest Dragon Smart kit, a Panzer IIIJ, and a Nieuport by Eduard in 1/48 scale. Bill replaced the engine in the Nieuport with a resin set from Roden. He also used cellulon to replicate the see-through panel in the upper wing of the aircraft.

Greg Reynolds purchased the next item at the IPMS Nationals, a very fine razor saw. Greg claims this is the finest razor saw made. Spacers, included with the set, allow stacked blade arrangements for cutting parallel tracks. The set cost $27 US and includes three blades plus various spacers.

John also brought in this British Africa Corps tanker on a custom wood base, featuring a prickly pear cactus.

The Eduard set includes a prepainted instrument panel and other fine upgrades.

The decal set includes two sheets of wood paneling. The instructions recommend a base coat of Model Master wood, with the decals applyed on top to add subtle woodgrain texture.

Additional photographs covered U-505, located in the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.

Jack Riggar presented a number of items he picked up at the recent IPMS Nationals held in Anaheim, California.

First was the Special Hobby X-15 kit in 1/32 scale, depicting the second test aircraft. The very large model features a fairly good cockpit, many resin parts, vacuformed and resin canopies, and a nice decal sheet (probably Cartograff of Italy) for $55 US.

Jack purchased the X-15 Photo Scrapbook over the internet, which features leftover pictures from "Hypersonic".

Miniart gave away many kits at the Nationals. The kits feature high quality moldings, even on the vacuformed parts, and Dragon-like engineering.
