Workbench

Greg Deck

Like so many modelers my hobby haven is in the garage. But, I've made it as homey as possible. My main workbench is a modified china cabinet. I love all the shelves, drawers and cupboards which help keep things organized. I also have a stereo and a nice heater to make it cozy. I don't mind sharing my space with the rest of the family, but if they're driving me crazy I just put on my respirator and start to airbrush. The compressor noise makes the cat bolt and the paint smell drives out the other mammals.

My airbrush is a Paache VL which I run off a one-gallon piston compressor. I'm very happy with Model Master enamels, except I haven't had much luck with their metalizer. Someday I plan to try out acrylics so I don't have to deal with solvent smell. I don't use any exotic tools, mostly needle files and an X-acto knife. One possible exception is that I use a lot of hemostats in combination with alligator clips when painting small parts. Hemostats by themselves can crush small plastic parts, so I use an alligator clip to hold the part and clip the hemostat onto the alligator. This gives me a lot of flexibility in positioning the part, doesn't damage it, and keeps my fingers out of the paint.

My main modeling interest is 1/48 military aircraft from all eras, but I do a bit of armor as well. My favorite kit to date is the Accurate Miniatures Grumman Avenger. I try to work on my models one at a time, but as you can see in the pictures, I've gotten a little behind with about 15 unbuilt kits. (Oh Greg, you have no idea how long that road is!) Greg Deck
