2008 Contest ResultsIPMS Santa Rosa and IPMS Mount Diablo would like to extend a very well deserved thanks to everyone who attended and supported Hobby Expo 2008--volunteers, clubs, vendors, donaters, and attendees. The event was a great success, with more attendees, more participants, more competitors, and more models then ever before. The sunny weather allowed many participating clubs to hold on-site demonstrations, including some amazing aerial acrobatics from the RC groups. Thanks to HobbyTown USA in Petaluma, childern had the chance to participate in two different make and takes--one for lego creations and one for models.A key element of every Hobby Expo is the model contest. For the first time ever, IPMS Santa Rosa attempted and successfully executed a partially computerized registration system. Entrants filled out registration forms and individual model registration cards in the traditional fashion, but this information was logged into a database during the show, and results were tabulated from that database in real time. Many clubs have attempted to computerize IPMS events, but we believe Hobby Expo 2008 was the first successful implementation of such a system. That is not to say there were not problems. As with any new administration system, computerized or not, unanticipated problems required fast and effective solutions. These problems were overcome and the new system ultimately worked very well. As a result, we can already offer the first detailed reports on the contest.
