Beginning Model Building Class in Japan

Location: Japan
Date Submitted: 7/28/2007
Photographer: Chris Zanella

So, I held my first model class here in Japan. I was informed this was a good weekend, but it turns out all the students were on summer break, which only lasts one week. In addition, half my students attended a big soccer camp taking place on the same Friday. I only had 6 students, but I am holding another class in September, after my summer break.

I bought the models on the same weekend I got a sponsor for our classes and game conventions. The owner of Leonardo's gave me a huge discount on the models shown in the first album picture. Each model cost about 50 or 60 cents. I purchased some additional models for myself, not pictured, for about $10.00 each. Leonardo's is a used model shop with 5 floors. A lot of the models I sent to IPMS Santa Rosa members came from there. It looks like Games Workshop is going to sponsor the other classes and our gaming conventions.

I showed the students how to remove parts with sprue cutters, and how to file away the remaining nubs. I was afraid hobby knives might be a little much for some of them. The students were as young as 5; I believe the oldest was 9. We used the closest thing I could find to Sharpies for painting. And there was very little gluing needed so I did that for each model.

I hope you all enjoy the pics.

My supplies and paint booth   I put out some completed models to inspire; all it did was give them something to break.   The first model we used; later this became spare parts.

I bought them all sprue cutters because knives might have been bad.   Yes, a girl building a model.   --and another.

I showed them how to file down where the sprues made contact.

They found the food.   More injuries here than in building models.   We used Sharpie type markers to paint the models.
