IPMS Santa Rosa Meeting Calendar 2008

Club Meetings

Unless otherwise noted, regular meetings start at 7:00 PM, the second Thursday of each month, at
HobbyTown USA in the Petaluma Plaze.

Meeting Show and Tell Theme or Special Event

July 10, 2008 A Century of Progress, 1951 to 1975
July brings the third leg of our Century of Progress theme pentathlon, covering the third quarter of the 20th century. Bring in a diorama, figure, or model of any subject as it appeared between 1951 and 1975. The best model, as judged by everyone attending, will win the theme award for July. In addition, all theme participants become eligable for the Century of Progress Pentathlon trophy, awarded at the November meeting.
August 14, 2008 Made in America
Let's see some good old AMERICAN made kits! You know what we're talking about: Aurora, Lindberg, Revell, Monogram, Hawk, Testors, AMT, ERTL. (Maybe even some Strombecker, Adams, ITC, and Renwal.) We know you have some in your stash. Don't let them languish under all those over priced prima donna imports. Pull'em out and build with pride!
September 11, 2008 A Century of Progress, 1976 to 2000
September brings the fourth leg of our Century of Progress theme pentathlon, covering the fourth quarter of the 20th century. Bring in a diorama, figure, or model of any subject as it appeared between 1976 and 2000. The best model, as judged by everyone attending, will win the theme award for September. In addition, all theme participants become eligable for the Century of Progress Pentathlon trophy, awarded at the November meeting.
October 9, 2008 Heavy Metal II
Got METAL? Our most popular theme from last year returns with another round of uparmored, overgunned, damage dealing monsters. Bring in your Detroit iron, main battle tanks, armored ground attack aircraft, armored knights, battleships, upgunned mecha, or even models with natural metal finish.
November 13, 2008 A Century of Progress, the Future
The Century of Progress theme pentathlon concludes with this final leg, the future. Bring in a diorama, figure, or model of any subject as it will appear from 2001 and beyond. The best model, as judged by everyone attending, will win the theme award for November.

In addition, if you've been working on a collection of related models for the Century of Progress Pentathlon, bring in ALL 5. The best group, as judged by everyone attending, will receive the Century of Progress trophy and a $50.00 gift certificate to HobbyTown!

Show and Tell Themes

Show and tell themes are intended to inspire club members (and visitors) to bring more models to the meetings. It does NOT need to be a new model. If you have a model even remotely related to the theme, bring it in! The more the better. We will present an award for the best theme model at each meeting, and that model will join the Theme Model Hall of Fame.

A Century of Progress

In addition to the normal array of random themes, five of the 2008 monthly themes mesh together forming a contest pentathlon--A Century of Progress. The rules are simple and everyone can play.

Every other month we will hold one leg of the Century of Progress Pentathlon. Each leg encompass dioramas, figures, and models representing subjects as they appeared during one quarter of the 20th century, plus a fifth segment for the future. ANYTHING from the specified time period qualifies for the monthy theme award. For example, for the 1901 to 1925 leg, you could bring in a Wright Flyer, a WWI biplane, an early tank, a dreadnaught, or even a science fiction subject from a book written during that period. The best model, as judged by everyone attending, will win the theme award for that month.

In addition, if you enter models in successive Century of Progress legs, and a logical connection exists between those models, the collection becomes eligible for the Century of Progress trophy, awarded at the November meeting. For example, an armor modeler could successively bring in tanks from WWI, WWII, Vietnam, Gulf War I, and Gulf War II (or a futuristic tank). An aircraft modeler could successively bring in famous fighters--a Fokker Triplane, a Spitfire, an F-4 Phantom II, an F-15 Eagle, and an F-22 Raptor (or an X-wing).

Bring ALL 5 related models to the November meeting. If you miss a leg, you cannot win the theme award for that meeting, but you can still bring 5 related models to the November meeting and compete for the Century of Progress trophy. One model in your collection must qualify for each leg. The best collection, as judged by everyone attending the November meeting, wins the Century of Progress trophy and a $50.00 gift certificate to HobbyTown!

Do I need to build a new model for each leg of the pentathlon? No! You are free to use completed models from your collection for each and every leg.

If I miss a leg, can I still compete for the Century of Progress trophy? Yes! Bring 5 related models to the November meeting even if you missed every other leg. One model must belong to each period: 1901 to 1925, 1926 to 1950, 1951 to 1975, 1976 to 2000, and 2001 and beyond.

What does "the future" mean? Any model of a subject from 2001 and beyond qualifies as "the future". This can be a real vehicle as seen between 2001 and 2008, a futuristic subject from your imagination, or a science fiction model.

Will there be two awards at the November meeting? Yes. During the November meeting, everyone attending will judge the best model of the future leg, and the best overall collection. The best future model wins the theme award for November. The best collection withs the Century of Progress trophy and a $50.00 gift certificate to HobbyTown.
